She's wireless - in spite of SBC

It had to happen eventually, I guess. Using a laptop for portability, yet being confined to the slow lane through dial-up was kind of stupid. I was on the Earthlink waiting list for over a year, but they still haven't managed to start a broadband service in my neighborhood.

Having DSL in my neighborhood requires using SBC - but alas, you have to use their telephone service. After the whole fiasco surrounding the installation of my telephone service two years ago when I moved to the condo. Long story short, it took a solid month to get a line, and that only because I finally went with another company. Of course, it took a long time to get the other company sorted out too... and now, this company is being purchased by SBC anyhow.

But SBC has a local, long distance, and DSL special I just couldn't resist. As much as I'm enjoying the set up now that it works, I'm really wondering if I made the right choice. Here's what's happened so far.

- my service was "accidentally" cut off for three days during my first week of service
- My DSL service started a day later than it was supposed to
- SBC sent me the wrong CD to set up my system
- SBC technical staff took 4 techs to figure out what the problem was in setting up the system
- After one guy helped me manually set things up, we discover that my account was set up wrong.

All is well now, or so I think. I guess I'll wait until I see what my bill looks like and how long my service stays connected properly.

In the meantime, I'll listen to my German radio stations and download music at dizzying super higtech speed!
