On religion and cheek turning
I was just sitting here thinking about how hard it would be to actually live as a really good Christian. All of that "turn the other cheek" and forgiveness stuff. I'm a pathological grudge holder. It takes a lot to get me to the point where my forgiveness may be warranted, but honestly, once the tide has changed and I've been hurt or pissed or something, that's generally it.
I don't really have anyone or any particular incident in mind here, but you know, I've got a lot of grudges - valid ones.
Perhaps it really is the Jewish upbringing thing - I mean, if you are going to be so generous with the forgiveness, where's the room for guilt?

You and me both, babe. I always like to say, "I can forgive but I can't forget." That's not really true; I mean, if you can't forget, can you REALLY forgive?
You can only forgive and forget if you are ready to do both, if you are able to truly let go of whatever you felt when you were wronged. Until that point, it's nearly impossible to let it go.
It's great to the "bigger" person by not holding a grudge, but forgiving and letting things go, but there's a lot to be said for standing up for yourself. When is one better than the other? Only you know.
