Ugly Children May Get Parental Short Shrift - New York Times
Apparently, parents are much more likely to strap a good looking child in the car seat/seat belt properly and pay more attention to a child if they are good looking. Or at least they might in Canada. A Yaley disagrees. Still, this study does explain a lot....

Why don't you just lock them in the closet when company comes over while you're at it?
Sheesh. You took my blog topic :-) This is awful, but there is that unthinkable thought that we all think when we see that (rare but) truly ugly child. "Wow. What an ugly child". And you see the parent so excited and effusive about that child and you wonder if they're not just not overcompensating it or faking it just a little bit...
I hate to go all geeky on you here, but I think the writer of this piece (or the researchers) failed to consider that we may be evolutionarily predisposed to favor cute children because over the millenia cute babies would tend to be healthier than ugly ones. So, humans would tend to lavish the cute ones with attention because the ugly ones are going to die anyway. However, I don't know how obvious the differences in care would be, as humans seem predisposed to dote over anything cute and small, e.g., small dogs, stuffed animals, anime girls, etc.
