Why I Won't Be Resubscribing to Public Radio

The following is a letter that I unfortunately had to write to my local Public Radio station here in Chicago. So pissed off am I at this station, that I not only sent them the following, but I filed a complaint with the FCC. Over reacting just a tad? Possibly. But don't fuck with my right to privacy.
Tonight at about 7 pm, I was sitting down to dinner. My telephone rang, the caller ID registered "Unavailable." For fundraisers, I understand that you must now allow at least your number to be seen. I wish it had, because I would like very much to call that number.I don't usually answer "Unavailable" calls, but I guess I had a lapse of reason tonight, as I picked up the phone.

When I did, a woman greeted me and reminded me that I'd once been very generous toward WBEZ. She informed me that the pledge drive had begun, and asked me if I'd consider renewing my membership. "Sure, I'd consider that," I responded. And her reaction? She swore under her breath and hung up the phone. She either misunderstood what I'd said, or just didn't feel like taking pledges. Either way, I will not stand for being harassed by you.

Seriously, how dare you? Yes, I hold WBEZ responsible for this incident. First of all, I've moved since you last had my telephone number. I didn't give you my new contact information because I prefer to support a different Public Radio station. You had the audacity to look me up and provide my contact information to some rude degenerate, and have her call me up and bother me? I will not stand for this.

Should I assume that since this woman had access to my name, address, telephone number, and amount of my last pledge, that she also has my credit card number as well? If I find a charge from public radio on my account, I will not only notify my bank of your fraud, but I will sue the station as well for misusing my information. I have already filed a complaint against your station with the FCC.

A former listener, disappointed by your lack of scruples,

Michelle

I gave up on public tv for a similar reason. I used to be a conscientious donor to public TV. However, I started to notice a pattern -- it was ALWAYS pledge season, and the shows that I liked to watch that had caused me to donate money in the first place were never on. It was always the Three Tenors, Suze Orman, or that guy who's always standing on stage blathering about something. And they kept calling me. I finally told them -- "Look, I pledge to keep you commercial free and see my shows. You're always running a drive, and my shows aren't on. At least on commercial tv I can see my shows, although with breaks in them"

I remember one enterprising station once ran a drive where they said "we're going to keep this drive going until we get X dollars". The drive was over in a day -- people paid to get the drive to stop.

Quite honestly, after I read your description a couple times and it sounded more and more like that gal spilled a drink all over her computer and it frizzed out her. She wouldn't have called you back, because, if it was from a computerized call center, she wouldn't have known your number.

Another hazard of drinking and dialing!

I like our local public radio station, but I'm with Lily. Public TV is shit on earth.

Can understand why you were pissed, though.

Bet
