Coffee Problem - Solved!

A few weeks ago I wrote about my coffee maker dilemma. Long story short for those of you who didn't read that blog and can't find it in the archives because I deleted the wrong year: I wanted to buy a drip coffee maker because I didn't have one. I like coffee a lot, and I found myself spending too much money at the Starbucks across the street.

I couldn't figure out which drip coffee maker to buy, and I have spent literally hours reading Consumer Reports and customer write-ups online trying to decide on which machine I wanted.

LilyG, bless her, reminded me of the French press - I had one of these all along, but I'd forgotten about it. I put the thing in the basement long ago because after years and years of drinking coffee from my Bodum French press, I decided I didn't like the coffee it made anymore.

Here's the thing: I'd bought the thing when I lived in Austria, and when I moved back to the US... THAT'S when I started having the problems with the coffee maker.

Fast forward to this afternoon. Lauren took me to Costco, and we passed by the coffee roasting section. Mmmmm fresh roasted coffee. I couldn't pass it up. I bought some Seattle Mountain Coffee. I took it home, I ground it up, and I carefully prepared it in the French press. Much to my surprise, and complete and utter glee, the coffee was wonderful. No sugar needed wonderful. mmmm mmmm mmmm.

Moral of the story? The coffee maker is as only as good as the coffee you buy.

Yay, you! I love my French press, which is why I have three, small, medium and large. (Actually I have three because of a miscommunication on a Christmas list one year -- everyone decided to get the first thing on the list, and only one person could READ regarding the size :-))

The problem is that Starf*x overroasts their beans -- their coffee is actually quite nasty. I just drink it because they're everywhere, I can load up one of those little cards and don't have to keep breaking big bills for a cup of coffee.

For regular beans, if you have a Trader Joe's -- they have some good ones for less than Starbucks. Whole Foods' Organic French Roast is pretty darn good too.

MMMMMM, I bought my sister a French press years ago. Great coffee that stuff makes. We still get it out every once in a while!

I like me some coffee, you know.
