At the urging of several friends, I went to go see the film "Dirty Pretty Things" tonight. I was not all that impressed with the movie, but I wouldn't say it sucked either - I mean, the story is good, it makes some very important social commentary about the exploitation of immigrants, and there are some very good moments (all the scenes in the morgue, for example).

The film suffered big in one area, and that is casting. Zlatko Buric, loved him. Chiwetel Ejiofor? YUM! But come ON - who the hell came up with the bright idea of casting Amelie (Audrey Tautou) as a TURKISH woman in an English language movie? I mean, honestly, who would buy that? At no point was I ever going to believe that this thick THICK French accent could be Turkish. And come on - this is Amelie. She was typecast the moment that film hit the theaters. I'm sure Amelie thought she was going to break it into Hollywood with this load of crap, but I think I can safely say, she just flushed her promising little career down the toilet.

To her credit - this is the first film I've seen her in (ok, I've only seen her in Happenstance and Amelie) where the camera doesn't shoot her face from an ultra close-up angle to emphasize her eyes. She's a beautiful woman indeed - but if she isn't playing a cutsie innocent, she's out of her league.
