Bet and I blogged today. Stennie has not, yet. I sure hope she does.
Tonight I had a very eye opening dinner with someone who has just been downgraded from "friend" to "pleasant acquaintence". It's funny how naive I can be at times, even at my age. I guess I always figured that by the time I hit my mid-30s, that I'd pretty much have people figured out.
I have, however, figured one thing out: everyone you know has a specific purpose in life, to you, and you perform a certain function in their lives. It seems awfully cold to type that out like that to look at and ponder, but it's true, and it makes a hell of a lot of sense.
For example, the friends you go out drinking with are not necesarily the people you'd turn to when you are having a real crisis. And those people with whom you can discuss your job, are not automatically the people you can discuss your love life or finances with. Some people you can be spontaneous with, and with some you have to be more controlled. In the same vein, the person you are sleeping with is not necessarily the person you are most intimate with. The person you have dinner with several times a month may call up someone else when they want to go on vacation.
When think of human interrelations in these terms, it makes everyone seem so calculating and horrible.
