Mike's Blog Topic Suggestions includes the question: "What nation currently involved in the "axis of evil" has the best cuisine?"
As I understand it, in Drinky's original speech on February 11, 2002 he listed Iran, Iraq and North Korea as the "axis of evil" countries. Then, on May 6th he added Cuba, Libya and Syria to the list.
Since I haven't tried every country's offerings, I had to do some research as to what is typical for each one. I decided to make the information that I found about each country's cuisine available to everyone, so that you too could have a chance to voice your opinions. Please read through this and give your personal ratings for the #1 Axis of Evil Cuisine.
I have listed them by rank, as by my own personal taste. This was no easy task.
Libyan food sounds fantastic! It is pretty much the same as Turkish food, but spicier and with some more exotic names.
Persian (Iranian) cuisine seems much lighter, like general "Middle Eastern" cuisine.. I list Persian cuisine in second place, only because I tend to choose spicier foods. I would be in nirvana with either meal.
Korean - I've eaten Korean before, and I've liked it very much. It is a lot like Japanese food, but has much more spice. They do fun things with Tofu as well! Now I know it is a "factoid" that Koreans have been known to eat dog. I've never seen it on a menu, but then again, I've never been to Korea. I am ignoring this issue for the purposes of this survey.
Syrian food seems to be very close to Greek and therefore very tasty. The sites I visited seemed to emphasize the use of lamb and chicken though, and as I don't eat those things, I'd have to rank Syrian cooking a little lower. Like Persian and Libyan cuisine, Syrian desserts include Baklava, which helps their overall score. Also, I couldn't decide which link to use, so I am including this one too.
Iraqi - Although these evildoers also include baklava as one of their delights, I don't think I would be very into an Iraqi meal. Going by the limited info I found using Google, the cuisine is very close to Persian, but includes much more meat and nasty things like sheep's head.
Cuban - I've actually eaten at Cuban restaurants in Miami and Chicago before, and I have to admit that I didn't like either meal. They don't have much that a vegetarian can eat - (they even put meat in the Rice and Beans), and the plantains are always too starchy for my palate On the upside, the coffee is good.
And that's it: six countries, their food and my choices. Thanks again to Mike for the idea!
